Regionals- Ulysses

The boys traveled over 3 hours away to Ulysses, Kansas. Once again, the Indians came home team champions and had 8 individual champions.  For the second year in a row, Hector Serratos also received Regional Wrestler of the Year! And our awesome coach Doug Eck received Regional Coach of the Year! We are so proud of all of our boys and the outcome of this tournament. Special thanks to all the parents who came out and cheered on our boys. 

Colton Miller, 106 lb. Junior defeated his two opponents by fall and became our first champion of the night.  

Pete Herbst, 113 lb. Junior lost his first match to Presson of Scott City and then prepared himself for Caraway of Nickerson. Herbst defeated Caraway with no problem and then lost to Cook of Colby. Pete then defeated Clark of Hesston and finished 5th but won't advance to Sub-State. Pete is one of the hardest workers on the team and had a great year. Good job Pete! 

Owen Eck, 120 lb. Freshman defeated McDaniel of Scott City and then was onto wrestle old competition in finals. Pauda of Ulysses didn't stand a chance against the way Owen wrestled this weekend. Owen won 7-3 and became our 2nd champ.

Hector Serratos, 126 lb. Senior pinned his first 2 opponents and wrestled Weber of Pratt in the finals. Hector defeated Weber once again and became our 3rd champion. 

AJ Furnish, 132 lb. Sophomore defeated his first two opponents and wrestled Pelland of Pratt in the finals. Furnish was close to pinning Pelland, but won by decision instead. He was our 4th champion of the night.

Kelby Eck, 138 lb. Sophomore lost his first match to Salas of Ulysses. Kelby continued to push his way to finish 4th and will advance to Sub-State. 

Jonah Meyer, 145 lb. Sophomore pinned his first opponent then defeated Mendoza of Hugoton 10-5. In the finals, Meyer fell short just a few points and finished 2nd. 

Ian Aouad, 152 lb. Freshman was on fire this weekend and pinned all three of his opponents and became our 5th champion of the night. 

Eli Aouad, 170 lb. Senior defeated his first opponent, Mendoza of Ulysses, by fall. After Mendoza, he wrestled Snell of Clearwater and defeated him by Tech Fall. In the finals, Aouad had new competition, Miller of Scott City. Aouad finished first and became our 6th champion. 

Riley Marx, 182 lb. Sophomore defeated his first two opponents by fall and had to wrestle O´Halloran in the finals. Marx took control and won by fall, placing first at his first regional tournament. 

Cayden Winter, 220 lb. Senior once again had an easy weekend and finished first as our 8th and final champion of the night.

Districts – Pratt

The time has finally come to start the State Qualifying Series. The boys traveled to Pratt, a team they would wrestle throughout the entire state series. Our Indians came back as team champions along with 7 other individual champions. We also cannot forget our other champion Doug Eck who received District Coach of the Year! We are so proud of him and Hector Serratos who also received District Wrestler of the Year. Congrats Doug and Hector!

Colton Miller, 106 lb. Junior only had two matches for the day and defeated both of his opponents by fall. Miller was our first champion of the night. 

Pete Herbst, 113 lb. Junior defeated his first opponent by fall and was to wrestle Weber of Pratt for the finals. Pete fought hard but finished 2nd.

Owen Eck, 120 lb. Freshman had no trouble pinning and defeating his two opponents. Owen became our 2nd champion of the night. 

Hector Serratos, 126 lb. Senior defeated his first opponent with ease and would face Weber of Pratt in the finals. Weber always puts up a good fight but Hector is always one step ahead of him. Serratos became our 3rd champion.

AJ Furnish, 132 lb. Sophomore defeated his first opponent by fall. Furnish decided not to wrestle his finals match so he placed 2nd.

Kelby Eck, 138 lb. Sophomore beat his first opponent by fall but lost to Thompson of Pratt. After losing, Kelby did not give up but fought his way to finish 3rd, advancing to Regionals. 

Jonah Meyer, 145 lb. Sophomore defeated his first opponent by Tech Fall. Meyer wrestled Thompson of Pratt and became our 4th champion of the night. 

Ian Aouad, 152 lb. Freshman wrestled his way up into the finals after defeating both of his opponents by fall. Aouad wrestled Thompson of Pratt and finished as our 5th champion of the night. 

Cody Engelbrecht, 160 lb. Freshman was unable to wrestle in the state series. Cody performed well throughout his season and we can't wait to see what he accomplishes next year! 

Eli Aouad, 170 lb. Senior came back into the game like he never left. Aouad defeated his two opponents by fall and decision and became our 6th champion of the night. 

Jake Engelbrecht 182 lb. Senior was prepared for the oncoming competition but unfortunately was unable to wrestle in the state series as well.  Jake has performed outstandingly these past few years on the wrestling team and we want to wish him the best of luck on his bright future. 

Riley Marx, 195 lb. Sophomore defeated his first opponent. Marx put up a good fight in his finals match but finished 2nd at his first district tournament. 

Cayden Winter, 220 lb. Senior defeated his two opponents by fall and became our 7th and final champion of the night. Winter is hungry for his state title and is someone to watch out for in this state series.

Garrett McCaskill, 285 lb. Junior lost to his first two opponents and will not continue on in the state series. 

Dual vs Wellington, Rosehill & Mulvane

Andale went against 3 different teams and were able to defeat two of the three. Our Indians faced Wellington to start off the night. Six of our wrestlers were able to defeat their opponents with a pin and the final score was 75 to 6. After Wellington, the boys went up against Rosehill. Andale had lost and the final score was 18 to 54. To finish the night, our Indians defeated Mulvane with a score of 43 to 31. Way to go boys!

58th Newton Tournament of Champions:

The Newton TOC always has good competition and great competitors for our boys. Overall, they were able to finish 5th out of 21 teams! They are a team to watch out for this year at state. 

Colton Miller, 106 lb. Junior wrestled into the quarter finals with ease. He had defeated Medina of Garden City and Sanders of Blanchard and was on to wrestle his old opponent, Treaster of Newton. After losing to Treaster, Miller was able to finish 4th overall in his weight class after losing once again to Glover of Goddard.

Pete Herbst, 113 lb. Junior, went against Duley of Seneca for his first match and Newman of Stilwell for his second and unfortunately lost to both but supported his teammates throughout the long day. 

Owen Eck, 120 lb. Freshman, easily defeated his first two opponents (Stevens of Goddard and Maki of Andover) and earned his spot in the semi finals. Eck went to work on Thiel of Seneca and defeated him by tech fall. Eck put up a good fight with Pappan of Ark City in the finals to finish 2nd in his bracket. 

Hector Serratos, 126 lb. Senior, wrestled his way up into the finals to face Craig of Valley Center once again. Serratos and Craig’s matches are always a toss up. It was obvious that the two had worked on each other's weak spots after their previous match at Bishop Carroll. Serratos finished 2nd in his bracket. 

AJ Furnish, 132 lb. Sophomore, defeated both Rempel of Maize South and Bewley of Blanchard by fall and was on to wrestle Padgett of Maize for his quarter finals match. Furnish had lost and was unable to finish his final match but finished 4th in his weight class. 

Kelby Eck, 138 lb. Sophomore, had lost his first match but was able to defeat Wageman of Winfield by tech fall. While facing his second opponent on the back side of the bracket, Eck lost 8-0 and ended the long day. 

Jonah Meyer, 145 lb. Sophomore, had good competition in his bracket. After defeating Simmons of Newton by fall, Jonah had lost his second match to Flores of Maize. Meyer did not give up and continued to push himself and was able to finish 5th at this tough tournament. He continues to improve with every tournament. 

Ian Aouad, 152 lb. Freshman, fought his way into the quarter finals to face Fisher of Goddard. After losing, Aouad had one final match against Bahm of Ark City and defeated him with no problem. Ian finished 3rd in his bracket. 

Cody Engelbrecht, 160 lb. Freshman, lost to his first opponent Morrell of Bishop Carroll and moved to the back side of the bracket. Engelbrecht then defeated his second opponent Barker of Stilwell by fall of 1:32. For his third match, Cody lost 1-0 and put an end to his long day.

Riley Marx, 195 lb. Sophomore, took a shot at his first TOC tournament. Marx put up a good fight with all of his opponents but did not place. Marx has been working very hard and continues to show much improvement throughout this season. 

Cayden Winter, 220 lb. Senior, was nothing but a stud on Saturday. Winter got to work on his opponents and earned his spot in the finals to face Ross of West. Cayden became our only champion of the night defeating Ross by decision of 9-4. 

Garrett McCaskill, 285 lb. Junior, lost his first two matches and was done for the day.

Salina South Wrestling Tournament:

Colton Miller, 106 lbs. Junior, lived up to his number one ranking in 4A, winning all three of his matches handily. He came out on top as the first place finisher for his weight class. 

Waylen Eck, 106 lbs. Freshman, participated in his first varsity tournament of the season. He put up a good fight in all four of his matches and was able to walk away with fifth place.

Pete Herbst, 113 lbs. Junior, with a wide range of competition, including his own teammate, Pete was one and two on the day, good for fourth place. He is looking forward to improving his rankings. 

Owen Eck, 120 lbs. Freshman, made another outstanding showing, winning all three of his matches. One by decision, and the other two by falls. His skill ensured his first place title. 

Hector Serratos, 126 lbs. Senior, two time state champion, was in familiar territory with another first place win. He beat out all three of his opponents by a fall, tech fall, and major decision. 

AJ Furnish, 132 lbs. Sophomore, was another one of our first place winners who showed up to compete. He easily defeated three opponents by fall and showed that he will be a tough competitor this season. 

Ian Aouad, 152 lbs. Freshman, Ranked sixth in 4A, is easily beating out his competition. He proved his dominance with three wins, two by fall and one by major decision, securing his first place finish for the day. 

Cody Engelbrecht, 160 lbs. Freshman, made a good showing with two wins and one loss. He pulled off a third place finish, and proved he will be one to keep your eye on this year in the following tournaments. 

Jake Engelbrecht, 182 lbs. Senior, also took third place along with his younger brother. Jake had two wins by fall and three hard fought loses. As a senior, he is using every opportunity to improve and move up. 

Riley Marx, 195 lbs. Sophomore, continues to impress us with every tournament. Even though it is his first year of wrestling, he was able to bring home a first place finish with two of his matches winning by fall and the third by major decision. 
Cayden Winter, 220 lbs. Senior , was another success story for the day. Not surprisingly, he accomplished his victory with 4 pins. He is definitely a contender for a state championship this year. 

Andruw Cocking, 220 lbs. Freshman, lost his matches, but he is improving every tournament and showed some good potential throughout the day. 

Garrett McCaskill, 285 lbs. Junior,  did not have his best day but continued to put up a good fight and managed to get 4th in his weight class, helping the team out.  

 

Bishop Carroll Invitational:

Staying close to home, the Indians traveled to Bishop Carroll to wrestle a wide range of competition. Our boys placed 5th out of 15 different teams! They ended the night with one champion, three runner-ups, one 3rd place, one 4th place, one 5th place, and one 7th place. 

Colton Miller, 106 lbs. junior, got his day started by pinning his first 3 opponents with no problem. Miller's next opponent was former state champion, Nick Treaster.  Miller fought hard during his match with Treaster but fell short by a few points. After Treaster, Colton had one final match against Castro of Dodge City and finished 4-0 earning 3rd place. 

Pete Herbst, 113 lbs. junior, lost his first two matches and received a bye on his 3rd match. Herbst kept a good attitude throughout the day and supported his teammates. 

Owen Eck, 120 lbs. freshman, pinned 4 out of 7 of his opponents, teched 1, and was headed into the finals. His final match was against Colin Bybee, 5A’s 4th ranked wrestler. Bybee put up a good fight but Owen was always one step ahead of him and became our only champion of the night! Way to go Owen!

Hector Serratos, 126 lbs. senior, had an easy way up to the finals. Serratos pinned all of his opponents and was on to face Alyeus Craig of Valley Center. Craig and Serratos’s matches are always a toss up but Hector fell short a few points losing 5-1 and became 1 of the 3 runner ups of the night.

AJ Furnish, 132 lbs. sophomore, followed a similar path to Serratos and pinned all three of his opponents and prepared to wrestle in the finals. Furnish would face Mendez of Dodge City, 1st All-Class ranked wrestler.  Furnish lost 9-3 and became our 2nd runner up of the night. 

Kelby Eck, 138 lbs. sophomore, lost his first match, won his second, received a bye, and followed that by another loss. Eck would face Gavalena of Maize South to determine his place of 5th or 6th. Eck performed well and defeated Gavalena of Maize South and placed 5th. 

Jonah Meyer, 145 lbs. sophomore, wrestled very strong throughout the day and had defeated all of his opponents. During the semi-finals match, Meyer had a collision with Adams of Wichita West and was unable to wrestle in the finals. Meyer was our final runner-up of the night.

Ian Aouad, 152 lbs. freshman, had good competition in his bracket. Aouad received a bye for his first match and later defeated his opponent with a fall time of 0:12. Aouad’s next match was against Lindsey of Derby, 2nd All-Class ranked wrestler. After losing, Aouad wrestled against Bowen of Campus for 3rd or 4th. Aouad finished 4th. 

Cody Engelbrecht, 160 lbs. freshman, lost his first match 10-4 and lost his 2nd match as well. Engelbrecht did very well on his 3rd match and won with a fall time of 1:27.

Riley Marx, 195 lbs. sophomore, wrestled in his first varsity tournament and lost his first match but was able to defeat Garreth of Andover central. Marx lost once more but was still able to finish 7th. 

 

Rose Hill JV Invitational:

Andruw Cocking, 195 lbs. sophomore, traveled to Rose Hill and wrestled 5 matches. Cocking was able to finish 3rd.

Clearwater Dual:

The first home dual of the year could not have gone any better. All Indians defeated their opponents and ended with a score of 82-0! Way to go boys! 

 

Washburn Rural Dual: 

Varsity boys take on Topeka Seaman, Washburn Rural, and Maize instead of attending Enid, Oklahoma. The Indians face the 9th All-Class team first. Owen, Hector, AJ, Ian, and Riley defeat their opponents but lose as a team 26-42. The boys move onto Topeka Seaman and Pete, Colton, Owen, Hector, AJ, Kelby, Jonah, Ian, Cody, and Andruw all defeat their opponents and also defeat them as a team with a score of 56-18. For their last round of the day, the Indians go against the 3rd All-Class Team. Hector, AJ, Jonah, and Ian all defeat their opponents but lose as a team 26-49.

 

McPherson Tournament (JV):

The JV boys traveled to McPherson to face their competition. With 2 first year wrestlers, all of the boys did very well and will continue to become better. They ended off their day with 2 champions, one 4th place, and one 6th place.

Waylen Eck, 113 lbs. freshman, had lost his first match to a 8-1 decision. On his next opponent, Eck had put him on his back after about a minute and went to continue on in his bracket. He fell short and lost to Upham of Junction City. 

Kelby Eck, 145 lbs. sophomore, was ready to win. Kelby defeated his first two opponents and was moving onto the finals. Eck won by a 10-2 major becoming the first champion. Kelby will move on up to wrestle with the varsity boys. 

Riley Marx, 195 lbs. sophomore, was taking on his first wrestling tournament ever. Shocking us all, Marx won by a TF against Elk of Mcpherson, won by a fall against Nolde of Nickerson, and put his final opponent to his back and became our 2nd and final champion of the day. Marx has been performing very well and will wrestle some varsity meets. 

Andruw Cocking, 220 lbs. freshman, was also competing in his first ever wrestling tournament. Cocking had a good attitude throughout the day but lost his matches. Cocking will also wrestle some varsity meets in the future. 

 

55th Annual Pratt Wrestling Tournament:

Varsity wrestlers take on their first tournament of the 2020-2021 season! The teams at the annual Pratt tournament always bring good competition for our boys. With our strong team this year, the Indians took 1st place as a team with a total of 168.5 points along with 7 champions, 1 runner-up, and one 4th place. 

Colton Miller, 106 lbs. junior, currently ranked 1st in 4A, had 3 excellent matches. After pinning his first opponent in 0:52, Miller was already thinking about his next competition and food too of course. Miller had won by a 6-0 decision against LaPlant of Augusta. He moved on to the finals and won by a major decision against Terry of Augusta. 

Pete Herbst, 113 lbs. junior, lost his first match but that didn’t get his spirits down. Herbst came out stronger against his next opponent and pinned him within the first minute of the match. Wrestling Chavez of Ulysses, Herbst fell short a few points but continued to support his team.

Owen Eck, 120 lbs. freshman, currently ranked 2nd in 4A, had good competition in his bracket this weekend. After winning his first two matches over a pin and major decision, Owen was confident in defeating his last opponent. Eck went into overtime with Pauda of Ulysses and strived under pressure. Owen got the first takedown and added onto the list of champions. 

Hector Serratos, 126 lbs. senior, currently ranked 1st in All-Class, won against his first two opponents with a pin and a TF. In the finals, Hector was going to face Weber of Pratt, the 2nd ranked All-Class wrestler. Serratos had no worries but knew what he needed to do and got it done. 

AJ Furnish, 132 lbs. sophomore, was prepared and determined to win this weekend. Furnish came off strong in each and every one of his matches. In his first match, Furnish won by a major decision and followed that by another win with a fall time of 1:16. AJ became our 4th champion of the night. 

Jonah Meyer, 145 lbs. sophomore, started off his day with a pin against Anguiano of Ulysses. Jonah followed that pin with another pin against Coldwell of Augusta. Meyer, in the finals, faced Thompson of Pratt and became our 5th champion of the night.

Ian Aouad, 152 lbs. freshman, currently ranked 6th in 4A, followed the same route as Meyer and quickly pinned his first two opponents. In the finals, Aouad won by an 11-5 decision against Thompson of Pratt. Ian became our 6th champion of the night. 

Cody Engelbrecht, 160 lbs. freshman, lost his first match. Engelbrecht competed well in his next match and pinned his opponent in around 30 seconds. Since Engelbrecht had to wrestle 4 matches, he ended up losing the following 2 matches. Engelbrecht ended up placing 4th and helped our team out greatly. 

Eli Aouad, 170 lbs. senior, currently ranked 6th in 4A, woke up with a positive attitude and was ready for his competition. Aouad was able to win his first 3 matches and rack up some points for the team. In the finals, Aouad fell short a few points to Davis of Augusta and was our runner-up of the night. 

Cayden Winter, 220 lbs. senior, currently ranked 4th in All-Class, had a great night. Winter put all of his opponents on their backs and scored many points for his team. Winter became the 7th champion and final champion of the night.
