Health

Children learn best when they are healthy.

Andale High School is committed to providing a safe and supportive environment where students and staff can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

At Renwick USD 267, we are dedicated to supporting student health and wellness as an important part of the learning experience. Each school health office is staffed by a state-licensed registered nurse (RN) committed to providing compassionate, high-quality care to students.

Our school nurses provide care for illness and injury, medication administration, chronic health conditions such as asthma and diabetes, emergency response, health education, and many other medical needs that support student success and learning.

About the School Nurse

My name is Hailey Jones and I am excited to be the school nurse at Andale High School. I recently completed my first year at AHS and have previous nursing experience in Pediatric Intensive Care, Emergency medicine, and Oncology.

Originally from Michigan, my family and I moved to Andale from San Diego and have loved becoming part of the Andale community. My husband, Brandon, and I have two children, Finley and Piper, along with our golden retriever and cat.

When I’m not at school, we stay busy with our kids’ sports, spending time traveling and camping, and cheering on the Indians! I enjoy building relationships with students and families and helping support a safe and healthy school environment.

Please feel free to email me anytime or send me a message through ParentSquare.

  • Students who are ill should remain home from school.

The school nurse, administrator, or designee will assess students who report illness during the school day to determine whether the student is too ill to remain at school or requires additional medical attention. Parents/guardians will be contacted after it has been determined that the student is too ill to remain at school. Parents/guardians are expected to pick up ill students as soon as possible.

Generally, students may be excluded from school for, but not limited to, the following reasons:

    • Fever of 100.0°F or higher
    • Vomiting with continued nausea
    • Diarrhea
    • Symptoms suggestive of a communicable disease
    • Any illness that prevents the student from safely or comfortably participating in the school day

Students must remain fever-free for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication before returning to school. Students experiencing vomiting and/or diarrhea must also remain symptom-free for at least 24 hours prior to returning to school.

School health offices are designed to provide first aid, administer approved medications, and care for students with chronic health conditions. Students who become ill at school should be picked up promptly to help prevent the spread of illness.

Any student identified by a physician, school nurse, or local health officer as having a communicable disease may be excluded from school for the duration of the illness. Students may return to school when authorized by a physician, local health officer, or after completion of any required isolation or quarantine period.

The following communicable diseases must be reported to the Sedgwick County Health Department and may require immediate exclusion from school pending further direction from public health officials regarding exclusion, readmission, exposure notification, and preventative measures:

    • Measles
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Meningitis
    • Shigella
    • Salmonella
    • Pertussis (whooping cough)
    • Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC)
    • Chickenpox (Varicella)
    • Hepatitis A
    • Tuberculosis

The following conditions are generally managed according to school nurse and healthcare provider recommendations:

    • Impetigo — May return once treatment has been started
    • Bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye) — May return once treatment has been started
    • Ringworm — May attend school while receiving treatment
    • MRSA/Staphylococcus aureus — Exclusion is generally not necessary if wounds are covered unless otherwise directed by a physician
    • Streptococcal infections, including strep throat — May return 24 hours after starting antibiotics
    • Pediculosis (head lice) — May return after appropriate treatment has been completed
    • Scabies — May return once treatment has been started
    • Bed bugs — Will be addressed on an individual basis by the school

The school district reserves the right to exclude a student for additional time if deemed necessary for the health and safety of the student population. If a student is excluded due to a suspected communicable disease, documentation from a licensed healthcare provider may be required prior to readmission. During outbreaks or public health emergencies, additional restrictions or requirements may be implemented as directed by the local health department.

  • Prescription and over-the-counter medications may be administered at school only when a completed Renwick USD 267 Medication Authorization Form is on file with the school nurse. If your child requires medication at school on a regular basis, please contact the school nurse regarding required medical forms and district medication procedures.

The school does not supply aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or other medications for student use. This includes cough drops, medicated lip balm/chapstick, and medicated lotions.

All medications must be provided in the original, properly labeled container and accompanied by the appropriate medication authorization form. The first dose of any medication must be administered at home to monitor for possible allergic or adverse reactions.

All medications should be transported to and from school by a parent/guardian whenever possible. High school students may transport approved non-controlled medications with parent/guardian permission in accordance with district procedures. In the absence of the school nurse, medication may be received by an office staff member or building administrator.

    Prescription Medications
The following requirements must be met for prescription medications to be kept at school:

    • A completed medication authorization form signed by both the parent/guardian and healthcare provider
    • Medication provided in the original pharmacy-labeled container with:
      • Student’s name
      • Name of medication
      • Dosage and time to be administered
      • Prescribing healthcare provider’s name
    • All prescription medications must be stored in the health office unless otherwise authorized

    Non-Prescription (Over-the-Counter) Medications
The following requirements must be met for non-prescription medications to be kept at school:

    • A completed medication authorization form signed by the parent/guardian
    • Medication provided in the original container labeled with the student’s name
    • Medication must not be expired and must be administered according to labeled directions unless otherwise authorized by a healthcare provider

    Self-Carry Medications
Students in grades 9–12 may self-carry asthma inhalers, epinephrine auto-injectors, and approved over-the-counter medications when the appropriate authorization forms are completed and on file with the school nurse.

Students who self-carry asthma inhalers and/or epinephrine auto-injectors must provide healthcare provider documentation confirming the student understands the proper use and administration of the medication.

All medications must be picked up by a parent/guardian on or before the last day of the school year. Any medication remaining after the last day of school will be disposed of by district staff in accordance with district procedures.

  • School board policy requires all students to comply with Kansas state immunization requirements. School immunization requirements are established by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) based on recommendations from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). These requirements also apply to students enrolling for the first time in a preschool or daycare program operated by the district.

Students must provide documentation of current immunizations or an approved exemption prior to school attendance. Students who have not completed all required immunizations may enroll and remain in school while completing the required immunization series. Failure to complete all required immunizations within the required timeframe will result in the student being considered non-compliant.

In accordance with K.S.A. 72-5209, students whose immunizations are not current may be excluded from school attendance. An annual exclusion date will be established by the district at the beginning of each school year.

For additional information regarding required immunizations for Kansas school attendance, please refer to the KDHE immunization guidelines.

    Secondary School Requirements

    • DTaP
    • Polio
    • MMR
    • Hepatitis A
    • Hepatitis B
    • Varicella
    • Tdap (required for students entering 7th grade and above)
    • Meningococcal ACWY:
      • One dose required prior to entry into 7th grade (typically administered at age 11–12)
      • A second dose required prior to entry into 11th grade if the first dose was administered before age 16

As an alternative to required immunizations, Kansas law allows the following exemptions:

    • A yearly written statement signed by a licensed physician stating that specific immunizations would seriously endanger the student’s health
    • A written statement signed by a parent/guardian stating that the student adheres to a religious denomination whose teachings oppose immunizations

Parents/guardians requesting a religious exemption should contact the school nurse for the required exemption documentation. Medical exemptions must be completed by a licensed healthcare provider and submitted to the school nurse.
